Open your cistern lid and check it regularly!
Feb 14, 2023
The first picture depicts the opening of a below ground concrete water tank. This tank was compromised by blackberry roots that entered through the connection ports as well as the gasket between the lid and the base. The second photo is the massive blanket of roots that was floating at the top of the tank prior to pumping out the water. These photos emphases the importance of having your tank regularly maintained.

Even though the owner shocked the cistern on a regular basis with a chlorine pellet product the iron bacteria was protected by the years of sediment build up. This is a prime example of the need for regular cistern cleaning.
The second set of photos depicts the Eco Fresh Cistern vacuuming process however the cistern must have a reasonable volume of water to perform the process. This eliminates the need to dump water unnecessarily.

Interestingly enough we cleaned two similar tanks today, 2400 imp. gal poly tanks (one green and one black) in different locations both with high iron deposits. As a result of the high iron deposits one of the residence had a damaged hot water tank - just another reminder of the importance of having your water tank/cistern cleaned on a regular basis.

Do you benefit from the plentiful rain we receive on the West Coast by harvesting and storing rain water? If so, it is pollen season, which means the dust that makes you sneeze can also collect in your tank making a sticky residue that reduces the effectiveness and longevity of your filter system.
To fight this problem, check your filters regularly, and replace as needed. Regardless of whether you harvest rain, or collect well water you should have your tank professionally cleaned on a regular basis to keep your entire water system in tip-top shape!
